How We Organized a Kitchen Pantry

7 hrs Project Time
2 bags Expired Items Removed
2 boxes Donated

An organized pantry isn't just about neat shelves — it's about making everyday life easier. From packing lunches to prepping dinner, a well-designed pantry simplifies one of the busiest areas in the home.

For this project, the goal wasn't just a pretty pantry. It was a customized system that fit the client's real routines — something functional, sustainable, and easy to maintain long after we left.

This is a full breakdown of how we approached the project, what we found, and what the space looked like at the end.

Cluttered pantry with disorganized shelves before professional organizing

Before: The State of the Pantry

This pantry had plenty of storage — it just wasn't working for the household. Like most pantry projects, items had piled up gradually with no system to keep things contained:

  • Deep wire shelving buried items toward the back, out of sight and out of mind

  • Categories had blended together, making everyday essentials hard to find quickly

  • Paper goods and bulk purchases had no designated home

  • Frequently used items competed for space with overflow storage

  • Expired food and unused small appliances were eating up valuable shelf space

What affects project time: Pantry size and item volume, whether expiration checking is needed, and whether new organizing products are being sourced and added.

The client wanted a pantry that looked organized — but more importantly, one that would actually function and stay that way.

Start with a clean slate.

Step 1: Empty & Assess

Every item came out of the pantry first. This let us see exactly what we were working with and plan a layout based on real volume, not guesswork — especially important with deep wire shelving that swallows items toward the back.

Step 2: Declutter & Donate

When it came to keeping, donating, or tossing, the client made the calls — what stayed, what no longer served the household. We handled the rest: about 2 bags of expired pantry items were discarded, and 2 boxes of kitchen items and small appliances were packed up for donation.

This is the part most clients are surprised by — how much quietly accumulates without anyone noticing.

Step 3: Sort Into Categories

Once cleared, every item was sorted into broad, flexible categories designed to hold up over time — not an overly specific system that breaks down the first time shopping habits shift.

Step 4: Install the Custom System

With categories set, we built out the system to match how this family actually moves through their kitchen:

  • Clear storage bins added to improve visibility and group similar items together

  • Turntables incorporated to make deep corner shelves fully accessible

  • Select pantry staples decanted into airtight containers

  • A dedicated zone created for paper products

  • A lower-access shelf designed specifically for lunch bags and grab-and-go items

  • Every category labeled for guidance — flexible enough to adapt as needs change

The Final Result

The finished pantry is now organized into intentional zones built for everyday use. Frequently used items are easy to reach, similar products are grouped together, and the deep shelving that used to swallow items is finally being used to its full potential.

Rather than an overly rigid system, the pantry was designed with broad categories that can flex as routines, grocery habits, and household needs change over time.

To carry the system forward, the client also received a custom Pantry Maintenance Plan with practical weekly and seasonal routines.

What Changed

✓ Expired stock cleared Roughly 2 bags of expired pantry items removed, freeing up shelf space that had been quietly lost for months.

✓ Deep shelving finally functional Turntables and clear bins brought the back of the wire shelves back into use instead of becoming a black hole.

✓ Everyday items have a home Lunch bags and grab-and-go snacks now sit in a dedicated lower-access zone, making mornings faster.

✓ Paper goods and bulk buys sorted Dedicated storage for paper towels and toilet paper means bulk purchases no longer compete with food storage.

✓ Built to last Broad categories plus a custom maintenance plan mean the system can flex with the household instead of breaking down in a month.

Why Professional Organizing Matters

One of the biggest misconceptions about this work is that you spend the whole day organizing alongside us. In reality, your input matters most for the decluttering decisions — what stays, what goes. From there, we handle the heavy lifting: emptying shelves, sorting every item, sourcing products, and installing the system.

Our goal is simple — a home that feels easier to live in, without adding to your to-do list.

Working with Shakari was such a positive experience! She's brought back a sense of order in my home, she lives up to the name — Your Orderly Space! She organized both my pantry and master bedroom closets. Not only are they "orderly" but she helped to create a system I can manage.
